Construction and glazing insolvencies dip in September – but pressures persist
New figures from Insight Data’s September Insolvency Report show a modest drop in company failures across the construction and glazing sectors, though signs of long-term stability remain elusive.
The latest data reveals a mixed picture. Builders’ merchants and large main contractors (with turnover of £5 million or more) held steady at 12 and three insolvencies respectively, with no change from August. Small builders recorded the most significant improvement, with 86 firms going under in September compared to 143 the previous month, marking a 40 per cent fall. The fenestration sector also showed a slight recovery, with 91 fabricators and installers ceasing trading against 116 in August – a drop of 22 per cent.
However, architects’ firms moved in the opposite direction, with 33 companies folding in September, up from 28 in August, an 18 per cent increase.
According to Insight Data, the overall picture remains one of cautious concern. “While the latest figures show fewer insolvencies, the underlying challenges are still very real,” said Insight Data’s Commercial Director Alex Tremlett. “Contracting workloads, fluctuating material costs and inconsistent demand continue to squeeze margins and confidence across the board.”
The company warns that the pressures on construction and fenestration businesses are unlikely to ease before the November Budget, when the industry will be watching closely for signs of support or stimulus.
In such conditions, accurate and timely market intelligence is proving vital. Insight Data’s real-time prospect database and marketing platform give businesses the clarity to identify opportunities, target customers effectively and make informed decisions that drive sustainable growth.
